The MP-78-9TM pistol has a certificate of conformity for firearms of limited destruction

The MP-78-9TM pistol, manufactured by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, differs from the Izh-78-9T model in slightly modified welded protrusions in the barrel (size, shape and position) in order to increase muzzle energy. Since 2008, MP-78-9TM pistols have also been equipped with barrels that have protrusions made by pushing through the barrel walls. At the same time, the muzzle energy of MP-78-9TM pistols with welded lugs is slightly greater than with pressed ones. The weapon is made almost entirely of steel, without the use of light alloys.

The automatic operation of the MP-78-9TM pistol works according to the scheme of using recoil with a free bolt. The trigger mechanism is hammer-type, double-action, with automatic safety cocking. Once all the cartridges have been used up, the bolt-casing moves to the bolt stop, actuated by the magazine feeder, and remains in the rearmost position until a loaded magazine is attached or removed from the bolt stop manually. On the left side of the bolt-casing there is a safety lever, which is also a lever for safely decocking the hammer. When on, the safety locks the hammer, trigger and bolt housing. There is a magazine release at the bottom of the handle.

Like the Izh-78-9T, the traumatic pistol MP-78-9TM inherited from the PSM combat pistol, in addition to the advantages of compactness and low weight, also its inherent disadvantages - a small and thin handle with a small angle of inclination, uncomfortable to hold, as well as small sights with a thin low front sight and a narrow rear sight slot. However, the Izh-78-9T rubber-fired pistol is one of the best examples when choosing a pistol for concealed carry or a backup weapon, if the goal is to purchase the most flat and generally compact pistol made of steel, created on the basis of a combat model. The Izh-78-9T pistol is currently classified as a firearm of limited destruction.

Weapon Information

One of the positive features of the MP pistol when it first came into production in 2004 was its frame. It was entirely made of steel and had a slight thickness. Of course, it did not have to compete with weapons such as the Makarov pistol due to its small size, but buyers quickly realized that the short barrel of a pistol, unlike a short-barreled revolver, does not affect effective shooting.

Since the dimensions and technical characteristics of the MP-78-9 TM traumatic pistol were excellent for self-defense, it was often purchased as an additional weapon or for women’s self-defense.

Design

Due to the change in the caliber of the weapon, the thickness of the rack and the walls of the barrel has decreased significantly (but still has sufficient strength for firing a traumatic cartridge with a rubber bullet).
The magazine body was also changed (the wall thickness became thinner, the cutout in the side walls changed) and the feeder. Due to the use of a 9-mm cartridge, the magazine capacity was reduced to 6 rounds (although, if you make your own feeder, the capacity can be increased to 7 rounds). In accordance with the forensic requirements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, inside the IZH-78-9T barrel there are two (after 2008 three) protrusions that do not allow firing a solid projectile.

The small size and weight of the pistol make it convenient for constant carrying.

Description of the technical characteristics of the MP-78-9 TM pistol

A new version of the MP-78-9 traumatic pistol was released in 2007, and apart from the TM index, it did not add significant changes to the design of the model. The only change was the ability to shoot more powerful cartridges, which increased the kinetic energy of the shot to 80 J. Otherwise, all the original characteristics remained the same:

  • Caliber – 9 mm;
  • Barrel length – 63 mm;
  • Fire mode – single;
  • Recommended cartridges – 9 mm RA;
  • Weight of the pistol when unloaded is 460 grams;
  • Length – 158 mm;
  • Magazine capacity – 6 charges.

Despite the fact that the lethal force of the weapon has increased, it is still recommended to use this model only for self-defense.

The PSM combat pistol is interesting, first of all, for its dimensions and weight.;) Especially in comparison with the PM. At one time I appreciated this; in the service holster on the belt it was not visible at all.;) And after a little training it was no more difficult to shoot from it than from the PM, although many employees even from the PM did not meet the standard. And the IZH-78-9T is just a product “based on the PSM” Reply |

The accuracy is not bad at all.

The AKBS magnum cartridge is from last year, the accuracy is really good, but it often jams.:( In the summer, competitions were held in IDPA style, and a batch of these cartridges was taken for them. So all the Thunderstorms and Jorge jammed on them after two rounds on the third... But on the “PSMych” they are more or less, the magazine can be shot out without plugs.
That's why they were used only in training. He had the rank of Master of Masters and barely made it into the top eight. It was very awkward))). But the pistol is a combat pistol, not a sports one... I can’t look at all kinds of rubber spits, MMG, SHP, without pain. Such things are spoiled! I believe that a weapon is just a tool, and how to use it depends only on the individual. But the fact that the authorities, and after them some easily suggestible individuals, equate us, weapon lovers, with all sorts of unworthy individuals is, at a minimum, an insult.

0 Valeriy Gladkiy 01/28/2017 1:15 pm Excellent pistol - small, compact, lightweight, all steel. Very convenient to carry. In Ukraine, rubber arrows are not allowed for everyone, so I’m chasing after such a gas one - but this is very rare in our area. And for the KS - I completely agree with you, it’s high time both yours and ours understand that we are not at all the kind of cattle that they are trying to show us in front of each other - there will be no indiscriminate shooting in the streets. After all, this is complete nonsense - a Kalashnikov assault rifle is possible, but a Makarov pistol is not. So you still allowed everyone to wear rubber bands - but here - only judges, journalists, police officers and deputies - the rest are not allowed. You see, my life on the outskirts of the city when I return from work closer to midnight is much less threatened than an employee of some tabloid or a deputy with a pack of bodyguards.

Design of the MP-78-9 TM pistol

Like most models of modern traumatic weapons, the MR-78-9TM traumatic weapon is made on the basis of military weapons and has an appearance similar to its original combat model. The only difference is the metal plate on the handle. This not only made the pistol body heavier, but also made it not very comfortable to use.

Another design flaw is the inconvenient store. Not only is holding the pistol difficult and inconvenient - the protrusion on the magazine intended for the little finger does not even accommodate the ring finger - the pistol itself cannot be reloaded quickly. And all because the magazine release is located at the bottom of the handle.

Although this model of a traumatic pistol is inferior in ease of use, it still has its advantages compared to other models. For example, a very convenient safety switch, which protrudes beyond the bolt on the left side of the body so much that it is convenient to use even if the working hand is in a glove. Which again is convenient for women and girls.

Tuning

The not-so-high quality of this model of traumatic weapon requires some improvements in the most vulnerable points of the pistol.

Tuning the handle by placing thicker pads on it will increase comfort during shooting. The recoil will no longer be so strong, and it will be easier to hold the pistol in your hand. Although carrying such a weighted version every day is not a very easy task, especially for women, and therefore you will have to abandon the option of carrying weapons every day.

In the passport attached to the weapon, you can read that the owner is simply obliged to familiarize himself with the operation of the firing mechanism, which can be done while removing the lubricant.

Tuning the USM consists of, when checking the mechanism, if the parts have unevenness and are in contact with each other, by grinding and using a special lubricant, eliminate this shortcoming.

During the production of this model of injury, in each release of the series, different types of shortcomings and flaws may be encountered, and therefore there are no clear recommendations for tuning the pistol. The buyer himself determines what needs to be changed in the design of the weapon in order to make it convenient and safe to use.

If difficulties arise during shooting (for example, ammunition is poorly fed into the barrel from the magazine), then it is necessary to tune the magazine and treat only the accessible places in the barrel. To better feed ammunition into the barrel and to prevent cartridges from sticking, it is recommended to bend the edges of the magazine.

What cartridges are best to use in a pistol?

The question of which cartridges are best to use for this type of traumatic pistol must be treated with great attention. Due to its light weight, this pistol model has high recoil, which, when used with cartridges with high destructive power, can harm the owner himself. Especially if the owner is a woman.

MP-78-9TM is a model that can withstand cartridges with a power of up to 80J, but it is not recommended to often use cartridges of such power, since the rigidity of such cartridges (such as Magnum) does not always withstand the barrel of a traumatized weapon, and rarely will any owner be lucky , if after several shots the barrel remains intact.

Of course, to effectively use ammunition, you must first decide for what purposes you will use the MP injury - for self-defense or for target practice.

Cartridges such as “Lethal +” are best used only for self-defense, and then only in cases where it is really necessary.

Shooting 50J training or sporting ammunition results in less recoil. You can use a weaker charge, but then you will have to deal with the problem of overcharging.

Much attention should be paid to already used cartridges. Based on their condition, the condition of the weapon itself can be determined. If the shells are inflated or have ruptures, your gun most likely needs a recoil spring replacement.

What else should you pay attention to when using MP-78-9TM

As noted above, each production series of the MP-78-9TM pistol has various production flaws.

For example, models produced after 2008 should be cleaned with some care and not touched while grinding the nicks in the bore, because they began to be made by pressing, and careless movement can lead to permanent loss of the weapon.

There are differences between the weapon and its combat counterpart, and therefore replacing the steel plates on the handle, although it will give your weapon a nice look, will not improve its combat qualities. By becoming lighter, the pistol will become less comfortable both in the hand and when shooting.

Although the pistol itself is very simple to use and it is very easy to monitor its condition, it is worth remembering that any improvement on the part of the owner can lead to a breakdown if careless or inexperienced intervention is carried out, and therefore to the irretrievable loss of the weapon.

Options and modifications

  • IZH-78-9T
    (since September 2008, produced under the name
    MP-78-9T
    )
  • MP-78-9TM

There are three barrel modifications:

  • V1: 2004—2007 two pyramidal barriers in the barrel at 6 and 12 o'clock. The first barrier from the chamber at 6 o'clock. The choke constriction is usually 5.5 mm. The most crowded option, but also the most unreliable. It is not recommended to shoot cartridges more powerful than 60J. (For 2006-2007 it is not recommended to shoot cartridges more powerful than 35J, this is due to defects in the production of those years)
  • V2: 2007 (end of year)-2008 two barriers at 6 and 12 hours. The first pyramid-shaped obstacle from the chamber is located at 12 o'clock and is located mainly in the barrel stand, which eliminates deformation of the barrel in the area of this obstacle. The second barrier at 6 o'clock has the form of a truncated pyramid, covering no more than 1/5 of the barrel channel, due to which the maximum possible power and reliability are achieved. Choke from 6 mm. Accuracy is mediocre. This modification produces energy higher than Groza-01, Groza-021 (EVO), MR-79-9TM (all modifications). Withstands the use of pre-reform cartridges, including Magnum for Inna (MDI).
  • V3 2008-N. The V. barrel is made by analogy with the “pressed” one in the MP-79-9TM, and has three barriers at 6 and 12 o’clock. Accuracy and energy are mediocre. Reliability is average.

Recommendations for using MP-78-9TM

To summarize, we can say that this model of traumatic pistol can and should be used as a self-defense weapon, since all the parameters and technical characteristics speak for this option of using a weapon. For the pistol:

  • The small size allows you to carry the weapon even in summer;
  • Fairly high stopping power with a short barrel;
  • Cartridges with kinetic power up to 80J are used;
  • It is possible to use it as a training one when shooting.

In general, if we take into account all the positive and negative aspects of the MP-78-9TM traumatic pistol, we can say that given the date of its release - 2007 - this is a good example of a traumatic weapon.

Legal status

  • Russia - certified as (until 2011 - gas weapons with the ability to fire a rubber bullet (GSV)) civilian firearms of limited destruction (OOOP) and are on commercial sale. To purchase, you must have a license to purchase, store and carry self-defense weapons from the OLRR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
  • Kazakhstan - after the purchase of traumatic weapons was authorized on January 1, 2008, a certain number of IZH-78-9T traumatic pistols were sold in the country. On April 2, 2014, the Parliament of Kazakhstan established a ban on the possession and use of traumatic weapons by civilians. On October 29, 2014, a decision was made to buy back previously sold traumatic weapons from the owners, however, traumatic weapons are still allowed as service weapons for private security structures
