New recruits: Patrol armored cars on KAMAZ chassis for the Russian Guard

Kamaz-43501 “Patrol” is an all-wheel drive armored vehicle designed for the needs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and first presented at the Interpolitech exhibition in 2014.

Thanks to the 4x4 wheel arrangement and a powerful 261-horsepower engine, the vehicle has good maneuverability, and its cabin is designed to transport 10 people and cargo with protection from bullets/shrapnel. Below we will consider what kind of transport this is, highlight its main technical characteristics, and briefly talk about its purpose and modifications.

Purpose Kamaz-43501 “Patrol”

The main purpose of the Kamaz 43501 “Patrol” vehicle is the transportation and protection of Ministry of Internal Affairs employees and cargo. This is achieved by dividing the vehicle into two compartments and a well-protected cabin. The machine was created by Asteys CJSC and the main customer was the Ministry of Internal Affairs. 10 people can fit inside, including the driver and commander.

Functionally, the machine can be used to solve the following tasks:

  1. Transportation of personnel.
  2. Transportation of goods.
  3. Towing trailers.
  4. Installation of special equipment and military equipment to protect people from bullets and mines.
  5. Escort of columns and security.
  6. Reconnaissance with the protection of people and transported equipment.

The Kamaz 43501 vehicle can be used for military purposes, but in practice it is more oriented to work in units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Why does the military police need it?

The functions of the military police are not limited to maintaining law and order in the troops and influencing violators. In wartime, the “red berets” are also engaged in guarding facilities and escorting convoys. When serving abroad in peaceful conditions, military police patrol the area, participate in the work of centers for reconciliation of warring parties, and carry out humanitarian operations. Military police are also involved in Syria. It needs armored vehicles, since “Patrols” can be used in areas of intense combat operations or where the threat of terrorist attacks and shelling is high.

Armored vehicles of the Patrol program: protected transport for the Ministry of Internal Affairs

Currently, several armored vehicle projects are being developed in the interests of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and its structures. As part of the program with the symbol “Patrol”, several armored cars have been created that can be used to transport personnel and cargo, carry out patrols, reconnaissance, etc. In addition, these vehicles are able to protect them from shelling or mine explosions. Several organizations from the automotive and defense industries were involved in the program, which resulted in the emergence of several variants of a promising armored vehicle. Let's consider the technology proposed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. KamAZ-43501/43502 “Patrol”

The first samples of equipment created as part of the Patrol program were presented a year and a half ago at the Interpolitex 2014 exhibition. One of the versions of such a machine was presented by Asteis CJSC, known for its developments in the field of protection systems and equipment. The specialists of this company took as a basis for their armored car the existing chassis of the KamAZ-43501 type, on which they mounted the original armored body and all the necessary additional equipment. The result of this was the appearance of a new armored car, which was proposed for arming various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The KamAZ-43501 “Patrol” armored car is designed to transport up to 10 people or corresponding cargo on various roads or off-road. The hull design provides protection for the crew and passengers from fire. When developing the project, the designers had to take into account some additional requirements, for example, reducing the dimensions and weight of the machine. Such requirements, among other things, led to some modifications to the base chassis aimed at reducing its length and height.

The Patrol prototype presented in 2014 was based on a modified KamAZ-43501 chassis. This product has a 4x4 wheel arrangement and is also equipped with a Cummins ISBe 6.7-250 diesel engine with 261 hp, connected to a nine-speed ZF9S1310 gearbox. When converted into the basis for an armored car, the chassis retained the dependent suspension based on axles and semi-elliptical springs.

The KamAZ-43501 "Patrol" armored car received an original armored hull with a hood layout with a total habitable volume that combines the driver's cabin and the troop compartment. Due to the specific layout of the base chassis, the Patrol body is distinguished by a relatively low hood and a fairly high floor of the habitable compartment, which gives the vehicle a characteristic appearance. The body of the armored car is assembled by welding. The basis of this unit is sheets of armor steel grade A3, having the necessary shapes and sizes. Armored glass is also provided. According to the developer, in the basic configuration the body of the new armored vehicle complies with class 5 of domestic protection standards.

The entire crew of the promising armored car is housed in a common habitable volume. The driver and commander are located in the front of the hull and have a set of equipment necessary to control the vehicle. For landing, nine folding chairs are provided, installed at the sides of the rear part of the hull. The driver and commander have their own side doors, and in addition, there are hatches in the roof above their seats. It was proposed to enter the troop compartment through the right side door (behind the commander's door), as well as through the single-leaf aft door. Hatches were also cut into the roof of the troop compartment.

The Patrol armored car, introduced in 2014, did not have any weapons of its own. At the same time, in the windows of the troop compartment there were embrasures with movable shutters, intended for the use of personal weapons of the crew. In the future, the vehicle could receive any combat module with the required characteristics.

The first version of the KamAZ-43501 “Patrol” armored car had a total weight of 12.7 tons. By reworking the design of the base chassis, the development company was able to slightly reduce the overall dimensions of the armored vehicle. In particular, the wheelbase was reduced to 3.67 m, and the load compartment floor was said to be lower in height compared to the base chassis in its original configuration. Given the available weight and engine power, the maximum speed on the highway was set at 100 km/h.

Having relatively high characteristics capable of providing a solution to the assigned tasks, the first version of the Patrol armored car had some problems. One of the main ones was considered to be the use of imported components, associated with the risk of interruption of supplies for political reasons. Thus, the need arose to rework the project using domestic components and assemblies. In addition, during this modernization, it was decided to change some features of the armored vehicle.

An updated version of the Patrol armored car was presented at the Army 2015 exhibition, and then at the Interpolitex 2015 salon. The goals and objectives of the armored car remained the same - transportation and protection of people, patrolling, reconnaissance, etc. In order to improve some characteristics and general ease of use, noticeable changes were made to the original project, which affected both the internal components and the appearance of the machine.

The biggest innovation of the updated project was the used chassis. The updated Patrol is built on the KamAZ-43502 chassis, which has some differences from the KamAZ-43501. It was also decided to abandon the imported engine, replacing it with a domestic KamAZ-740.652-260 diesel engine with a power of 260 hp. This made it possible to maintain the main characteristics, but exclude the influence of foreign supplies.

The general layout of the body of the KamAZ-43502 “Patrol” armored car remained the same, but the design of this unit was modified. In particular, the basic level of protection has dropped to class 4. At the same time, additional reservation modules were proposed, with the help of which the armored car’s protection could be increased to class 6A. Several door installation options are also offered. Two, three or four side doors, as well as a hinged aft door, can be mounted on the hull. There are hatches in the roof. The configuration of such means for getting inside the machine can be determined by the customer.

Inside the armored hull with a volume of 12 cubic meters it was possible to place seats for 10 paratroopers. If it is necessary to transport any cargo, a load weighing up to 1500 kg can be placed in the habitable compartment. It is possible to tow a trailer with a total weight of up to 5 tons. In terms of its dimensions, the armored car does not differ from other vehicles of this class: length 7.15 m, width 2.5 m and height 3.1 m. The curb weight of the updated “Patrol” is declared at level 11 .75 t.

The power plant used allows the armored car to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. The power reserve exceeds 1000 km. It is possible to overcome a ford up to 1.75 m deep, a ditch 0.6 m wide and climb a wall 0.5 m high. To solve additional problems, the machine is equipped with a hydraulic winch with a force of up to 6000 kgf.

Subsequently, a third version of the Patrol armored car was created, which is a modernized version of the second. It differs in some details that have a significant impact on the survivability of the vehicle itself and its crew. For example, certain measures were taken to protect the crew from explosive devices. In addition, the ergonomics of the armored car have undergone some modifications.

It was reported that in 2015 it built a prototype of an updated armored car and submitted it for testing. Over the next few months, it was planned to carry out the entire range of necessary checks, after which the Ministry of Internal Affairs was supposed to draw conclusions and make a decision on the future fate of the proposed equipment. New reports about the progress of the tests have not yet appeared; the decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also remains unknown.

KamAZ-53949 "Patrol-A"

At the end of 2014, information appeared about the possible emergence of an alternative to armored cars. A few months earlier, the Kama Automobile Plant presented its new KamAZ-53949 Typhoon armored car, which was originally intended for the armed forces. At this time, the defense industry was faced with foreign sanctions and a sharp reduction in the range of available imported components, which could have a negative impact on the progress of several projects.

The design of the Typhoonok armored car uses a significant number of imported components and assemblies. In particular, it is the foreign engine and transmission that form the basis of its power plant. Axles and tires were also supplied by foreign companies. In this regard, information appeared in the press about possible problems with the serial production of such equipment and its subsequent use in the army. The result of such rumors was reports about the possible renaming of the Typhoon project to Patrol-A and the subsequent offer of this vehicle to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Such assumptions have not yet received sufficient confirmation. So, last fall, representatives of the development company argued that the new armored car should go into production in 2022, despite all possible problems. At the same time, it was actually planned to offer it to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The KamAZ-53949 "Typhoonenok"/"Patrol-A" armored vehicle is a protected all-terrain vehicle, proposed for use in patrolling areas, escorting convoys, conducting reconnaissance and solving other tasks. The vehicle body is designed to protect the crew from small arms fire and explosive devices.

The KamAZ-53949 armored car is equipped with a Cummins 6ISBe 350 diesel engine with a power of 350 hp. and an automatic six-speed hydromechanical transmission from Allison. It should be noted that these particular features of the project are considered the main disadvantage and may pose a certain risk in the current international situation. The chassis of the vehicle is built on axles with hydropneumatic suspension.

"Typhoon" / "Patrol-A" received a hood-type body with a single habitable volume. The body is welded and equipped with combined protection consisting of metal and ceramic elements. This armor corresponds to level 3 of the STANAG-4569 standard and allows you to protect the crew from armor-piercing rifle bullets. The hull is also equipped with mine protection corresponding to levels 3a and 3b - detonation of up to 8 kg of TNT under the wheel or under the bottom. The hull is equipped with armored glass, providing good visibility and protecting the crew from fire. There are no embrasures in doors or glass.

There are 10 seats installed inside the habitable compartment of the hull, including the driver’s seat. There are four seats mounted forward in the direction of travel, as well as six installed at the sides in the rear of the hull. Due to the need to protect the crew from the effects of explosion energy, special “mine-resistant” seats with appropriate seat belts are used. To enter the vehicle, it is proposed to use four side doors and one rear door. There are also several hatches in the roof of the hull.

With a total weight of 14 tons, the KamAZ-53949 armored car is capable of transporting up to 2 tons of cargo. At the same time, the car is capable of accelerating to 105 km/h and overcoming various obstacles. The dimensions of the armored car correspond to the dimensions of other equipment of a similar class. Length is about 6.5 m, width is about 2.5 m, height is less than 2.7 m.

The first sample of the KamAZ-53949 armored car was demonstrated back in 2013. Subsequently, this equipment was shown several times at various exhibitions of weapons and military equipment. According to the latest data, the armored car is undergoing the necessary tests, based on the results of which it can be put into service and put into production. The first production vehicles of this type are planned to be released in 2018.

At the end of 2014, it was reported that due to the widespread use of imported components, the Typhoonok armored car may not reach the Russian armed forces. In this regard, unconfirmed information has appeared about a possible offer of such equipment to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Among other things, it was reported that the armored car had already been presented to the commander-in-chief of the internal troops. However, further detailed news about the Typhoon/Patrol-A project was not received. As before, the main messages about this vehicle concern construction in the interests of the armed forces.
